Job description

As Senior Sustainability Analyst, you will play a key role in ensuring regulatory assurance, audit readiness, and bio-traceability across VARO’s renewable fuels supply chain. You will help manage mass balances, validate sustainability documentation, and contribute to regulatory reporting obligations across core European markets such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Spain, Germany and Austria. You will also support the implementation of our new Sustainability Operations System and be instrumental in shaping a future-proof sustainability assurance function across VARO – at an exciting time, with RED III, and ETS2 being implemented across these member states and VARO growing to an integrated player in the biofuels value chain.

This is a mid-career position, ideally suited for candidates who have worked in biofuels trading, operations, or bio-compliance and who are ready to step into a cross-country role that supports both Rotterdam (The Netherlands) and Hamburg (Germany) sustainability operations.

Responsibilities

  • Sustainability Documentation & Mass Balancing
    • Manage quarterly renewable mass balances under ISCC-EU, including preparation, validation, and system reconciliation via CEEMAS
    • Match physical stock positions with sustainability documentation (e.g., Proofs of Sustainability / PoS), ensuring end-to-end bio-traceability
    • Validate incoming PoS in line with RED/ISCC and contractual requirements and allocate them efficiently to customer deliveries
  • Audit & Compliance Support
    • Prepare and support ISCC-EU (and other voluntary scheme) audits for VARO’s certified entities
    • Maintain audit trails and data records for inventory and sustainability documentation (in line RED III rules)
    • Liaise with bio trading, operations, legal, and external auditors as needed
  • Regulatory Reporting & Advisory
    • Contribute to national compliance reporting (e.g. THG-Quoten in DE, HBE/ERE in NL, BEHG/nEHS/ETS2, FuelEU)
    • Monitor regulatory changes relevant to biofuels and ensure requirements are reflected in internal processes
    • Provide advisory support to the Bio Trading Desk and Business Development teams on feedstock and documentation eligibility
  • Cross-Functional Integration
    • Act as interface between the Sustainability Assurance team and key functions (Bio Trading, SCM, Legal, Finance)
    • Support onboarding of new CEEMAS features and provide input on bio-traceability logic and reporting dashboards
  • Process Improvement & System Work
    • Contribute to ongoing rollout of Sustainability Operations System in Benelux
    • Identify automation opportunities through AI and other automation tools
    • Take a proactive role in designing sustainable documentation and compliance processes fit for RED III, ETS2 and others

Job requirements

In order to fulfill the content of the job the ideal candidate has/is:

  • You bring a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business, supply chain, sustainability, environmental science, or a related field
  • 3–6 years of relevant work experience, ideally from a renewable fuels trader, supplier, or bio-compliance team
  • Experience in sustainability documentation, RED/ISCC compliance, biofuels blending and/or trading, or similar areas is essential
  • You understand the regulatory landscape (e.g. RED II/III, ISCC, ETS2, FuelEU Maritime) and have contributed to reporting or audit preparation
  • Proficiency in Excel and data handling is required; experience with CEEMAS, JDE or similar ERP systems is a plus
  • You are organized, proactive, and detail-oriented, with the ability to work cross-functionally in a dynamic, international environment
  • Fluency in English is required; French, German and/or Dutch is a strong plus
